The Nutcracker- A Reflection
Last December 5, 2005, Saturday, almost all of the class of 3E1-3EEM attended the ballet “The Nutcracker” held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines at around 3pm. As the show began, we were all enticed by its grandeur. Basically, we all know that The Nutcracker is one of the all-time favorite classical ballet staged every yuletide season.
The story goes with Marie being fond with a nutcracker that Drosselmeyer, the toy maker, has given to her. And in the midst between fairy magic and reality, the nutcracker somehow came into existence, with the emergence of the Land of the Sweets, and a fairy-like romance came to bloom. It started with the scene at Marie’s house. with a big christmas tree so profoundly standing at the middle of the house, and when Marie got her nutcracker, and until the evening, since Marie was so fond with her nutctacker, she fell asleep under the Christmas Tree with the nutcracker beside her. In the midst of what seems a dream, she was there with the nutcracker, alive and moving, and fighting off the mouse king. When they defeated it, they both went to the Land of Sweets, where they were warmly welcomed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier. The Nutcracker Prince narrated to them their past obstacle with the mouse king and how they come to vanquished the monster. After that, a series of dances were performed, at least 6 dance performances. On the finale of the story, Marie was awoken from her dream. She was under the huge Christamas Tree, but what was the twist? The Nutcracker Prince came true and was with her.
The ballet was indeed an exquisite timeless classical piece. It has extraordinary ways to reveal and share the spirit of Christmas in its most fairy-like magical way. It reveals the classical fantasy of a child’s heart, how it hopes, how it ventures, how it dreams. It is explicit the child’s simplicity and pureness of heart. And in this light, we could see the child’s anticipation of the Christmas Season
